in search of our better selves?

character: max rockatansky, titular hero of the mad max series and the blueprint archetype from which so many others descend. a former cop with the main force patrol, a special task force created to combat increasing lawlessness, max witnesses the murder of his wife and son by a biker gang, an event that transforms a seemingly well-adjusted family man into an embittered survivor. as the world continues to fall apart, so too does max's sanity; he is a man of few words and even fewer motivations, haunted by persistent hallucinations and seemingly driven only by the paramount objective of survival by any means necessary. as he wanders the australian outback alone in a stolen V8 Interceptor, max changes the places he visits and sometimes becomes changed himself, rediscovering the last remnants of his own humanity.

personality: aloof, brusque and dry, max is a man seemingly only out for himself. there is a no-nonsense way about him, abrupt in both speech and manner, which makes him come off as rude, disinterested, and careless. he is a survivor: hugely capable and inhumanly tough, tenacious and resourceful, more protective of his heart than his body. he copes with loss by avoiding attachment, preferring to live in complete solitude without contact with other people unless strictly necessary. this is a choice that's left him deeply suspicious, uncivilized, and subject to hallucinations, chased by accusatory voices and figures from his past that he'd failed to help. once invested, max can become a valiant, selfless, and fierce protector, willing to put everything on the line - including his own survival - to do what he feels is right.

tl;dr: a dystopian cop turned wasteland drifter reaching his final evolution as a primal, adrenaline-fueled, raggedy ass coyote of a man haunted by The Horrors (personal, existential and otherwise).

appearance: (canon says otherwise but) 5'9", a muscular 160lbs, brown hair, blue-green eyes, dressed in well-worn leathers that have been mended and patched over 15-odd years. he is scarred all over, visibly across his scalp, eyebrow, shoulder, and notably bearing a handmade knee brace for an old gunshot wound on his left knee. branded at the back of the neck and bearing an unhinged back tattoo.

canon: all five mad max films, the fury road prequel comics, and a sprinkling of the 2015 video game lore, set between thunderdome and fury road. i usually default to a fury road-era max.

cross-canon: surely! let's throw our characters at the wall and see what sticks. i'm especially happy to interface with any fellow post-apoc fandoms like the walking dead, fallout, and the last of us, but i can make almost anything work. see below for a bit more on a modern day-type au!

AU CONCEPT: MODERN DAY.

GENERAL.
Leaning into his original backstory as a pursuit officer with a special task force at the brink of societal breakdown, the modern day version of Max is a cop with the state police/highway patrol rather than a local municipal agency. As such, he spends most of his time enforcing traffic laws on highways, flirting with reckless endangerment and a growing disenchantment with law enforcement. Shaken by the tragic deaths of his partner and later his family, he's become more emotionally unstable, mistrustful, and prone to violence. Just on the edge of losing his mind, as a treat.

CRIMINAL UNDERWORLD.
Within environments where characters are operating outside the law, Max will likely take on the role of 'the muscle': a guard, driver, mercenary, or an otherwise hired gun with few (if any) attachments. He'll maintain his canon background as a former cop who lost his family to gang members, on the run from his former life, but in this case, he's made the choice to put his skills to use in the best way he knows how.

SUPERHERO, URBAN FANTASY, ET AL.
In canons where there are instances of superpowers, abilities, or other supernatural elements, Max stays as a non-powered human, equipped only with his natural abilities of performance driving and combat. But within a world contending with higher powers, Max does what he can from his end and has tipped over into dealing extrajudicial punishment as a vigilante, capturing, hurting, or killing those who escape justice.
