Abbreviated (lol) history here:
CW: animal death, torture, forced marriage

A young police officer for the Main Force Patrol, Max Rockatansky serves as one of Australia’s last lines of defense against an increasingly lawless dystopian world. Putting his legendary driving skills to use in pursuit of justice, Max helps protect the innocent by keep marauding biker gangs at bay. Plagued by nightmares and dark thoughts about his use of violence, Max nevertheless maintains his status as the MFP’s finest officer. But when his friend and fellow officer Goose becomes bedridden and disfigured by Toecutter’s gang in an act of retaliation, a terrified Max resigns from his post, taking his family with him to live out a quiet life in the countryside. Stalked by the same gang that killed Goose, Max’s wife and young son are run down and killed in an act of violence that will take Max from badge-wearing lawman to embittered sole survivor. Hellbent on revenge, Max steals the MFP’s supercharged prototype cop car, the Pursuit Special, and hunts down every last gang member, leaving the last handcuffed to a burning car with one, awful choice: either saw off his foot to escape the cuffs, or die when the car’s gas tank explodes. Driving away before he’s able to see his handiwork, Max leaves, never to return.

In the years that follow, society crumbles. Pandemics, oil wars, and nuclear war eventually turn the earth into a post-apocalyptic landscape - the Wasteland - with remaining souls doing anything and everything to survive.

Three years later, Max, now traveling with a blue heeler simply called Dog, lives out of his Interceptor modified to carry extra fuel. While battling marauding bikers for petrol, Max meets a traveling gyrocopter captain, who leads him to an oil refinery run by peaceful settlers. Where he begins this adventure looking to make a simple trade - his help in exchange for fuel - the ensuing war between the marauding barbarians and the settlers soon draws Max in. Leading a heroic charge into the barbarians, Max loses his dog, his car, and nearly his life while the settlers make a safe getaway.

Fifteen years later, the landscape has changed completely, turning into an endless expanse of featureless desert. A hardened desert wanderer, Max follows a thief to a large settlement called Bartertown. He offers himself as a mercenary to its dominatrix leader, but is soon cast out into the Wasteland when he’s unable to hold up his end of the deal. In the desert, Max is rescued by a tribe of lost children, who take to him as a prophesied leader. A long suffering Max eventually helps the children rescue a former Bartertown villain, and battle its leader Aunty Entity in another brutal road war. The children fly safely away in a small aircraft while Max, spared by Entity, must start over once again with little more than his life.

Some time later, Max, in a recovered Interceptor, is run down by War Boys, then captured and taken as a blood donor at the Citadel, a fortress-like settlement ruled by vicious tyrant Immortan Joe. As Max attempts to make his escape, he is brought into a battle between Immortan Joe and his “wives,” young women forced to endure life as human livestock, led by defected Citadel commander, Furiosa. When Max convinces the women to return home, the group retake the Citadel in an epic road war that sees Immortan Joe and his army destroyed and disbanded. Having earned one another’s respect, Max and Furiosa part ways, Max disappearing into the freed Citadel crowd.

• Character Personality:
— Positive Trait: VALIANT. Staying in a department of only a handful of cops in a dying society is one thing, but taking on an entire army of warboys, despots, and vehicles armed to the teeth with only a handful of his own in tow? That's bravery, baby! Max and courage come hand in hand: he is someone who will attempt the impossible, who will stand up to bad actors when he is far outnumbered, and is always the first to volunteer for a dangerous or difficult task. Willing to fight almost any opponent - in a fight to the death in the Thunderdome or not - Max never cares to consider the ways he's outmatched, always determined to find a way forward.

— Positive Trait: RELENTLESS. Max's true superpower is this: no matter who or what he's up against, no matter how little there is for him to work off, he can and will find a way to achieve his ends. Pursued by a gang of gasoline-crazed lunatics? Sure. Shot in the knee? No problem. Captured, kept in a cage, and used as a human blood bag for kamikrazee cult warriors? Just another day at the office. Physically, Max can withstand anything that's thrown at him, having recovered from injuries and situations too many to name. (With scars all over his body as evidence.) But emotionally, spiritually, metaphysically? He can lose his car, his belongings, his own blood, be forced to travel the desert entirely on foot. But no matter what, he will simply not give up the ghost, fighting back with an animal strength until his dying breath.

— Positive Trait: SELFLESS. While his personality these days is mostly about staying quiet, minding his business, and aggressively ignoring the plights of others, it's all a cover for the good man hidden under the surface. Self-centeredness keeps him alive out in the desert, sure, but at one time, Max used to be a lawman, a cop whose sworn duty was to protect the innocent and punish the guilty. At his core, Max is giving and noble, qualities that come out again and again during his travels. Once convinced or invested in a cause, he will put absolutely everything on the line to help, often at great cost to himself, having more than once sacrificed his most prized possession - his car - to help shepherd groups of innocents to safety. These acts are grand enough that tales of the Road Warrior's exploits have made their way across the Wasteland, and passed down through communities.

— Negative Trait: ANTISOCIAL AND AVOIDANT. Generally introverted and quiet, extreme trauma has seen Max retreat even further inwards. After his closest friend is nearly killed in the line of duty, Max begins to pull away, resigning from his job to take his wife and young son to live out what he thinks is a safer existence in the countryside. This is Max's natural inclination, to find security in quiet solitude. And once his family is killed, this is exactly where he heads: right into the Wasteland to lead out a life of self-imposed isolation. It's a safety mechanism to guard himself from the pain of losing anyone else he cares about. He won't feel loss if he doesn't have anyone to lose to begin with, right? This is a pervasive inclination that's as woven into his ability to survive as anything, with Max often keeping people at arm's length to prevent attachment.

— Negative Trait: FERAL. In the nearly two decades since he's left everything behind, Max's intensely solitary lifestyle has driven him to the brink. No longer in contact with living people, he's nearly mute by the time he's captured in Fury Road, his voice a gruff rumble from disuse, reduced to animalistic grunts and growls and using his teeth as a problem-solving tool. In the absence of words, he's more likely to use gestures, noises, or actions to communicate his feelings. It's behavior befitting a feral dog: alert, suspicious, and highly reactive. This is his fight or flight tipped into overdrive, a state of constant hyperarousal in the years-long absence of human connection.

— Negative Trait: RECKLESS. Dating back to his days as part of a special police task force, Max is a person who plays fast and loose with his own safety. While this is borne of a natural fearlessness, it's a quality that's gotten him injured, and can extend to the safety of others, too. Often, his objective is more important than the preservation of life or property, willing to use people or things to achieve his ends without consideration of the consequences. As his mental health has deteriorated, Max's lack of regard for himself becomes even more obvious: his desire is to drive into the Plains of Silence - a mythical place he knows probably doesn't exist - in order to find inner peace seems like a story he tells himself in lieu of actually giving up.
